Mobile management requires CIO’s attention…

29 July 2011 - CIO’s are embracing mobile technology to engage with external customers, but may be overlooking internal mobile management practices, according to a recent survey.

Mobile Mentor, an independent mobile management service provider conducted a survey amongst delegates at last month’s CIO conference and, according to CEO Denis O’Shea, the results were surprising…

”Despite mobile devices taking on much of the role of a traditional PC, nearly 40% of enterprises we surveyed currently allow their mobile devices to be unmanaged by their IT department.”

O’Shea says the picture is replicated in the area of mobile expense management, with many enterprises having no robust expense management systems in place. A large percentage (42%) of the respondents review their bills manually every month (highlighter and ruler scenario). A further 5% of respondents are not managing mobile expenses at all. The result is that on average companies overspend by an estimated 15% on their mobile fleet.

This is in contrast to the importance placed on the use of mobile technology as a channel to engage with customers. The vast majority of delegates are, not surprisingly, already using mobile technology as a channel for customer communication (79%).

Mobile is also used for marketing (47%), sales (32%) and service (18%). The importance of application development and deployment is directly related to the drive to use mobile as a means to communicate with and service customers. Over 40% of respondents mention application development and deployment as main priorities over the next year in this context.
