Mobility Solution for Food Safety Inspectors
New South Wales Food Authority is an Australian government statutory authority, responsible for food safety and food labelling regulations in the state as well as consumer food safety promotion. The NSW Food Authority works with key agencies including local councils and NSW Health to ensure effective food safety and food quality management underpins confidence in the state’s food industry and reduces the incidence of food poisoning.
The NSW Food Authority has a largely field based work force made up of both internal staff and external contractors. In 2012, The Food Authority, developed an iPad app called “Byte Mobile” for their internal food safety officers to conduct inspections and audits in the field. Both user groups travel extensively across the state to complete inspections and audits to assess compliance with food safety programs and the Food Standards Code.
The solution was highly successful and the Food Authority saw the opportunity to extend the functionality across to its external “Third Party Auditors.” This presented a set of challenges as these users didn’t have an AD account for authentication and used personally owned Android and iOS devices.

Mobile Mentor leveraged the existing “ Byte Mobile” app and its integration to the Food authority’s complex back end to create the new solution for Third Party Auditors. The “Food Audit NSW” app was developed using hybrid development technology (iOS and Android) and was deployed via a BYOD profile using MobileIron.
Productivity Gain for Internal and Independent Inspectors
The Food Audit NSW app has been deployed to over 65 Third Party Auditors across NSW. The solution reused the auditing functionality and integration from the Byte Mobile app, to save time and cost in development and focused on improving the user experience by improving the UI, reducing steps and automating functionality.
